Pome
Definition
A pome is a fruit with a core of small seeds surrounded by firm flesh, such as an apple or pear. Golden Delicious apples and yellow pears are pomes, and quince, a hard fragrant relative, belongs to the same group. Pomes differ from drupes, which have one hard pit. Many pears are best picked firm and ripened at home, then tested by pressing gently near the narrow top. See also: Drupe, Astringency, and the guide "How to Choose Ripe Yellow Fruit at the Market".
