Should yellow fruit be stored in the refrigerator?

The answer

Ripen climacteric fruit at room temperature first, then refrigerate when ripe to slow further change. Very cold storage before ripening can lead to dry, mealy flesh in some stone fruit, and many tropical fruits dislike cold when unripe. Citrus usually keeps longer in the refrigerator, generally lasting weeks, while a whole pineapple keeps only a few days. Store cut fruit covered and cold, and keep cut melon cold at all times.
