Is star fruit safe for everyone?
The answer
No. The US National Kidney Foundation says people with kidney disease should avoid star fruit, because it contains a neurotoxin that healthy kidneys can clear but diseased kidneys cannot. It lists hiccups, mental confusion and seizures among the signs of poisoning. If you have a kidney condition, avoid it and speak with your healthcare provider or dietitian. Star fruit is also known as carambola.
