Rootstock

Definition

A rootstock is the root system onto which a fruiting variety is grafted, influencing tree size and hardiness. It also affects how well the tree tolerates poor soil and its resistance to certain diseases. Dwarf and semi-dwarf rootstocks keep trees small enough for a backyard and easier to prune and harvest. When you buy a tree, ask what rootstock it is on and what mature size to expect. See also: Grafting, Cultivar, Hardiness zone, and the guide "Growing Yellow Fruit Trees at Home: Getting Started".
