Grafting

Definition

Grafting is joining a cutting of one plant to the roots of another so that they grow together as one tree. Most fruit trees are grafted: the fruiting variety (the scion) is joined to a rootstock. Grafting lets growers reproduce a named cultivar exactly and choose tree size and hardiness. When planting, keep the graft union, the swollen join near the base, above the soil line.
