Nomenclature
Drupe
Definition
A drupe is a fruit with a fleshy outer layer around a single hard pit that holds the seed, such as a peach, apricot or cherry. Botanically, plums, nectarines and mangoes are also drupes. Many yellow stone fruits are drupes, and they share a short, juicy season and a delicate nature. In some the flesh clings to the pit (clingstone), in others it separates cleanly (freestone), which matters for slicing and baking.
