Chill Hours

Definition

Chill hours describe the amount of winter cold that some fruit trees need in order to flower and fruit well. Deciduous trees such as peaches and pears depend on it. A high-chill variety struggles in a mild winter, while a low-chill variety may bloom too early in a cold region and lose its blossoms to a late frost. Ask a nursery which varieties suit your local winter. See also: Hardiness zone, Pollination, and the guide "Growing Yellow Fruit Trees at Home: Getting Started".
